The world, Japan and Oita's “great!” encounter and move in a lively way The Festival of Arts Culture × Sports


Rugby World Cup 2019 ™ Japan Tournament will be held from September 20th to November 2nd, 2019, and Oita Prefecture is one of the venues.
During the period, many people from home and abroad are expected to come to Oita Prefecture.
The iichiko Culture Center and the Oita Prefectural Art Museum have prepared a number of global and local “great!” projects under the name
“ The Festival of Arts x Culture x Sports".
Please enjoy the space filled with stimulating “meeting and fusion”.

Detective Conan: Scientific Investigation

Based on the world of Detective Conan, you can enjoy and experience the scientific investigation to solve the case.
With "detective handbook," you can go through "crime scene inspection area" to collect evidence, "information gathering area"
to research information, and "lab area" to investigate the case scientifically. Let's uncover the truth of the case!

Golden Age of Edo Ukiyo-e The Ukiyo-e Utagawa School - From Toyoharu to Kuniyoshi, Hiroshige -

Focusing on Utagawa School, this exhibition surveys variety of Ukiyo-e print beloved by the public as it shows lifestyle in Edo period. With the hypothesis that Toyoharu Utagawa, the founder of Utagawa School, might be considered originally from Usuki, the exhibition introduces Toyoharu's successors such as Toyokuni, Toyohiro, Hiroshige, and Kuniyoshi, as well as the competitive Hokusai. The works vary from portraits of beautiful women, Ukie with Western perspective, and other interesting traits by Ukiyo-e masters.

Japanese Aesthetics - Swords and Metalworks -

This exhibition features swords made by Japanese traditional technique. Sword symbolizes spirit of warrior, and its increasing popularity reflects the importance of its particular beauty. The exhibition includes the masterpiece in Japan as well as Oita's local swords which were made for practical use. In addition, we display the accessory of sword like metal ring and other metalworks from Meiji period which gained international acclaim. The exhibition provides the opportunity to get in touch with traditional aesthetics.

Wales×Oita Friendship Exchange The Art of Wales Exhibition in Oita

The Rugby World Cup 2019 Japan will be held from September 20th to November 2rd in Japan, and Oita is one of the venues. " Wales × Oita Friendship Exchange - The Art of Wales Exhibition in Oita " will be held at Oita Prefectural Art Museum (OPAM) from 27th September to 27th October. The exhibition aims to enhance the friendship exchange between Oita and Wales. Wales is known not only for a rugby powerful team, but also for the ‘King Arthur's legend’ depicting a British medieval hero and a stage of the novel ‘Alice in Wonderland’ . Works created by 13 artists will be exhibited. Julia Brooker, an acrylic painter, who works worldwide. Chris Bird-Jones and Amber Hiscott, who work extensively on works of Glass Art. Ten artists from Fireworks Clay Studio are exhibiting their unique ceramics.

-The National Treasure of OITA-

"Usa shrine" is the general headquarter of about 40,000 Hachimangu shrines in Japan. "Fukiji-temple"
is one of the three famous amidado buildings in Japan . "Usuki Stone Buddha" represents stone Buddha of our country. These famous national assets in Oita prefecture and will be shown by huge panels of about 3 m high. Bus tours to the areas are introduced as well.

The display of portable shrines

The portable shrines from three old shrines in Oita city will be displayed.The portable shrines are god’s vehicle to circulate local area during festival once a year.

The display of Hita Gion Yamaboko

Hita Gion Yamaboko has been registered by UNESCO as the Intangible Cultural Heritage. The festival has 300 years history. People pray that diseases, storms and flood damage are sent away and they can be in peace. Yamabokoes are gorgeous and about 10 meters high. They parade streets with the sound of the Gion festival ensemble and the evening paper lanterns are decorated gracefully.

The exhibition of "Traditional Crafts in Oita" "Technique" and "Beauty" as Oita’s heritage

“Beppu bamboo craft” developed in the environment blessed with natural bamboo and hot spring in Beppu City. “Onta pottery” preserves traditional technique in Onta area of Hita City. “Hita Japanese wooden clogs” made of cedar has 500 years history.

Bamboo Lantern is held in Usuki-City every November. You can enjoy the fantastic world by the lights of faint flame from bamboo hand lamps and art objects.
